Nelson Maths for NZ: Student Book 1

These days, I tutor individuals who have specific learning disabilities. Prior to this, whilst teaching, I did the training for the Numeracy Project.
This book (system) is an excellent resource for one-to-one teaching. It builds on prior knowledge, provides practice, develops understanding and ranges of strategies. It is easy to work effectively at the appropriate point of learning and at a pace that matches ability. We can zoom through the known and focus on the unknown. It can be taken home to practice on between lessons.
Students often come to me with gaps and imperfect information to work with. They are unable to perform sometimes the simplest of maths tasks. Using a complete system such as this supports the teacher and student towards full understanding and so enables the student to become an confident mathematician.
It has been developed for the current NZ mathematics Curriculum which means I know I am scaffolding the student closer to his/her expected level.
