In compiling this Chinese dictionary, words were selected on the basis of what language we felt our students would be most likely to meet and need to use. We considered words' usefulness, their frequency and range of meaning. In this, we were guided by our practical experience and by reference to the published word-lists, to E.S.L textbooks and to research into vocabulary acquisition. To the 3,000 words thus gathered we added approximately 300 words considered valuable because of their defining-power. These were taken from the Longman's dictionary.
